Kanthi was formed in 1998 when eleven weaving families in Pillaiyarpalayam decided to sell directly rather than through the mandi. Today the society has sixty-two member families and a shared dyeing unit.
Every saree carries the name of the person who wove it. Sixty-eight paise of every rupee you spend goes to the weaver — the industry average is closer to thirty.
The looms are pit looms, the silk comes from Dharmapuri, and the zari is tested for purity by the co-operative before it reaches a loom.
